Jörg demus

est né à St Pölten en Autriche en 1928. Sa mère était violoniste de concert et son père, le Prof, Otto Demus, un historien de l'art de renommée internationale.

A l'age de 6 ans il prend ses premières leçon de piano et à 11 ans il entre à l'Académie de Musique de Vienne. A côté des études classiques au lycée, il étudie piano avec le Prof. Walter Kerschbaumer, orgue avec le Prof. Karl Walter et composition avec Joseph Marx. Ensuite il accomplit des études approfondies à l'étranger surtout à Paris avec Yves Nat et au Conservatoire de Saarbrücken avec Walter Gieseking. Il côtoye W. Kempff , A. Benedetti Michelangeli et E. Fischer .

En 1943 il fait ses débuts à Vienne et est invité à la suite en Italie et en Suisse.
En 1950 il est à Londres et à Zurich ; en 1951 il effectue sa première grande tournée en Amérique du Sud . Son début à Paris dans la Salle Gaveau en 1953 est sensationnel: M,Clarendon du Figaro lui fait une critique extraordinaire avec le titre:''Jörg Demus joue et gagne'', En 1956 Jörg Demus gagne le Prix Busoni au Concours International de Bolzano, C'est à cette époque qu'il donne des concerts dans presque tous les centres musicaus du monde occidental et de celui oriental,

Depuis des années, Jörg Demus est invité régulièrement aux festivals internationaux. En 1969, lors du ''Festival pianistico Benedetti Michelangeli'' il exécute l'oeuvre complète de Schumann, Il joue également sous la direction de chefs prestigieux tels que H. von Karajan, J,Krips, Carlo Zecchi, André Cluytens, Seiji Ozawa, A, Argenta etc.

Ses disques, pas moins de 350, comprennent l'œuvre complète pour piano de Robert Schumann et de Claude Debussy, le ''Clavier bien tempéré'' et la ''Clavierübung'' de Bach, des concertos pour piano de Bach, Haydn, Mozart et Schumann ainsi que de nombreuses œuvres de musique de chambre (Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble ) et accompagnements pour '' Lieder '' avec Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elly Ameling, Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau, Peter Schreier , Theo Adam,

Comme un des premiers dans le monde Jörg Demus commençait dans les années cinquante de collectioner des pianos historiques, Il jouait pour le bicentenaire de Beethoven 1970 les pianos de Beethoven ( Broadwood et Conrad Graf) à Bonn,

En tant que pédagogue, Jörg Demus transmet son expérience à un grand nombre de jeunes pianistes en Europe, aux Etats Unis et au Japon dans des cours de perfectionnement,

Quant au style de son interprétation, les grands maîtres ont donné une forte empreinte au jeu de Jörg Demus, La limpidité de Walter Gieseking a enrichi son jeu aussi bien que l'abondance en couleurs de W. Kempff , la richesse de sentiments de E. Fischer et le désir de perfection de Michelangeli, Mais au-delà de tout cela on remarque dans le jeu de Jörg Demus un caractère très personnel, né de l'ambiance musicale de sa ville natale, ce qui fait de lui l'interprète incomparable de Schubert,

Born: December 2, 1928 - St. Polten (Lower Austria), Austria

The Austrian pianist, Jörg (Wolfgang) Demus, was born to received his first piano lessons at the age of six. His mother was a concert violinist and his father, Prof. Otto Demus, a universally known art historian. At the age of 11, he was allowed to enter the Vienna Academy of Music, where he studied piano and conducting, graduating in 1945. When Jörg Demus was 14 years old, while still a student at the Conservatory, he made his debut as a pianist at the famous Brahms-Saal for the prestigious Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. Besides the regular high school he studied piano with Walter Kerschbaumer, organ with Karl Walter, conducting with Hans Swarowsky and Joseph Krips and composition with Joseph Marx. After completing these studies in Vienna, he went abroad to study with Yves Nat in Paris from 1951 to 1953. In 1953, he attended master-classes with Walter Gieseking at the Saarbrücken Conservatory. He studied interpretation further with Wilhelm Kempff, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, and Edwin Fischer.

In 1950 Jörg Demus gave first concerts in Zürich and London and 1951 he went on his first extended tour to South America. His debut in Paris in 1953 at the Salle Gaveau turned into a regular sensation. The star critic, Clarendon, wrote an enthusiastic review under the title “Jörg Demus joue et gagne.” The same year he made his debut in Vienna as a mature artist. In 1956 he won the important “Premio Busoni” at the International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy. Since that time he has performed in all the important music centers of the Old and the New World. His New York debut was followed by annual tours to the USA and since 1961 regularly tours to Asia, Australia and Japan. For many years he has been a regular guest performer at international festivals. He has often played under the baton of Herbert von Karajan, Joseph Krips, Carlo Zecchi, André Cluytens, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Seiji Ozawa and many others.

Jörg Demus maintained a notable solo career, noted for combining a basically Romantic sound and line with an interest in historic keyboard interpretation and early model pianos. He was especially noted for personal interpretations of Bach and flexible, colourful renditions of Debussy. He also was well regarded for the main line of German piano music from Mozart to Schumann, and for his performances of the piano music of César Franck.

Jörg Demus was a sensitive accompanist, and worked with singers of the highest calibre, including Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Elly Ameling. His version of Schubert's Winterreise, with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, is perhaps the most critically acclaimed of all recordings of this great song cycle. He also accompanied violinists (Josef Suk, for instance) and cellists (Antonio Janigro). He sometimes appears in piano duet and two-piano concerts with Paul Badura-Skoda, who shares Demus' interest in older keyboard instruments. Demus acquired several notable examples of early instruments, including harpsichords and pianos by Broadwood, Clements, and Conrad Graf, and has recorded appropriate music on them. In honor of Beethoven's 200th birthday, Jörg Demus played on Beethoven's Broadwood and Graf pianos at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn. Near Salzburg the Jörg Demus Museo Cristofori, where visitors can appreciate the history of the piano, is growing and in master-classes in Europe (ILMA Vienna, etc.), USA and Japan he is an appreciated pedagogue.

Many of his recordings have won international awards. Up to now Jörg Demus has achieved a repertory of more than 350 LP's, compact discs and video-recordings. He has recorded the complete piano works of Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy, J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered-Clavier and Clavierübung, piano concerti of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann, as well as important works of chamber music with the Wiener Philharmonisches Kammerensemble and Lieder, mainly with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elly Ameling and Peter Schreier. Several of Jörg Demus' recordings were inspired by his passion of collecting old historic keyboard instruments.

Jörg Demus has also authored several essays, many of which were published a book of essays, Abenteur der Interpretation (Adventures in Interpretation) (Brockhaus Edition, 1967), and is co-author with Badura-Skoda of an analysis of the Beethoven piano sonatas (1970). He also composes - sonatas for violin and piano, violoncello and piano, trios, pieces for piano solo and several songs were created.

In 1977 Jörg Demus was awarded the Beethoven-Ring of the Vienna Beethoven Society, and in 1979 the Mozat Medal of the Vienna Mozart Society; in 1981 he received Honorary Doctor degree of Amherst, and in 1986 the Schumann Award of Zwickau


wurde am 2. Dezember 1928 in St. Pölten/Niederösterreich geboren. Seine Mutter war Konzertgeigerin, sein Vater, Universitätsprofessor Otto Demus, war ein weltbekannter Kulturhistoriker.

Den ersten Klavierunterricht erhielt Jörg Demus im Alter von sechs Jahren. Schon mit elf Jahren trat er in die Wiener Staatsakademie für Musik ein. Neben humanistischen Gymnasialstudien absolvierte er Klavier bei Prof. Walter Kerschbaumer, Orgel bei Prof. Karl Walter, Kapellmeisterschule bei den Professoren Swarowsky und Krips und Komposition bei Joseph Marx. Daran schloss sich eine Zeit ausgedehnter Studien im Ausland an, besonders in Paris bei Yves Nat, bei Walter Gieseking in Saarbrücken, bei Wilhelm Kempff, Arturo Benedetti-Michelangeli und Edwin Fischer.

Im Alter von vierzehn Jahren debütierte Jörg Demus mit einem Klavierabend im Brahms-Saal der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien. Im Jahre 1950 Debüts in London und Zürich, im Jahre 1951 die erste ausgedehnte Tournee durch Südamerika. Sein Debüt in Paris in der Salle Gaveau im Jahre 1953 wurde zu einer Sensation. Der Starkritiker des Figaro - Clarendon - schrieb eine begeisterte Kritik unter der Überschrift "Jörg Demus joue et gagne". 1956 erhielt Jörg Demus beim Internationalen Pianistenwettbewerb in Bozen den Premio Busoni.
Seither hat Jörg Demus in nahezu allen Musikzentren der Alten und Neuen Weltkonzertiert. Dem Debüt in New York folgen jährliche Tourneen durch die USA, Japan, Asien, Australien und alle europäischen Staaten.
Seit vielen Jahren ist Jörg Demus gefeierter Gast bei internationalen Festspielen. Er hat unter Herbert von Karajan konzertiert, aber auch mit Joseph Krips, Carlo Zecchi, Andre Cluytens, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Seiji Ozawa, um nur einige zu nennen.
Viele seiner Schallplatten wurden mit internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Bis jetzt liegt ein Repertoire von über 350 Langspielplatten, Compact Discs und Video-Aufnahmen vor, das Gesamteinspielungen des Klavierwerkes von Robert Schumann und Claude Debussy umfasst, das "Wohltemperierte Klavier" und die "Clavierübung" von Bach, ferne Klavierkonzerte Bachs, Haydns, Mozart, Beethovens und Schumanns, aber auch zahlreiche Kammermusikwerke und Liedbegleitungen, besonders mit Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elly Ameling und Peter Schreier.
Das jahrzehntelange Sammeln alter Tasteninstrumente, die von Grund auf sielbereit restauriert wurden, hat Jörg Demus zu zahlreichen Schallplattenaufnahmen angeregt. An Beethovens 200. Geburtstag erklangen Beethovens Broadwood und sein Hammerflügel von Conrad Graf unter den Händen von Jörg Demus beim Beethoven-Fest in Bonn. Im Salzkammergut entstand sei Museum "Die Geschichte des Klaviers".
In Meisterkursen besonders in Japan, USA und Italien, sowie in seinem Klaviermuseum im Salzkammergut ist Jörg Demus ein hochgeschätzter Pädagoge.
Ein Band mit musikalischen Aufsätzen ist bei Brockhaus unter dem Titel "Abenteuer der Interpretation" erschienen, ebenfalls ein Buch über die Klaviersonaten Beethovens.

Seit einigen Jahren hat sich Jörg Demus auch der Komposition zugewandt. So entstanden Sonaten für Klavier und Violine, für Klavier und Violoncello, Trios, Kompositionen für Klavier Solo und zahlreiche Lieder. 2006 österreichische Erstaufführung seiner Oper "Der Tor und der Tod" nach Texten von Hugo von Hofmannsthal im Wiener Kunsthistorischen Museum (Uraufführung in Japan).
